Two years before Tommy Lee Jones's daughter, Victoria Jones, was found dead from a suspected overdose, the Oscar-winning actor took legal action in an effort to protect her.

According to Marin County Superior Court docket entries reviewed by PEOPLE, Tommy, 79, filed a petition on Aug. 7, 2023, seeking to establish a temporary conservatorship over his daughter, who was 31 at the time.

The court index shows the Men in Black star submitted a “Petition for Appointment of Temporary Conservator of the Person,” along with supporting declarations and an ex parte application. A judge approved the request days later, appointing a professional temporary conservator to oversee Victoria’s personal care. Additional docket entries reflect that the conservatorship was later extended on a short-term basis.

The docket does not publicly detail the specific circumstances that prompted the filing, nor does it include medical information, hospital records, or the contents of the declarations submitted to the court, which are typically confidential in conservatorship cases.

However, the San Francisco Chronicle previously reported that at the time of the filing, Victoria was being involuntarily held at a hospital in Greenbrae under a 14-day psychiatric hold after authorities determined she posed a danger to herself or others. The outlet also reported that Tommy's petition stated his daughter was appealing the hold and requested that a conservator arrange for her to be transferred to a drug rehabilitation facility "immediately upon her release."

In Dec. 2023, Tommy reportedly asked the court to terminate the temporary conservatorship. A Marin County judge granted the request on Dec. 18, 2023, court records show, per the Chronicle.

Those details are not visible in the publicly available docket entries reviewed by PEOPLE, and PEOPLE has not independently confirmed the reported psychiatric hold or the specific language contained in the sealed petition.

Victoria, who was 34, was found unresponsive early on Jan. 1 at the San Francisco Fairmont Hotel, where she was pronounced dead, and may have died of a drug overdose, PEOPLE previously reported.

In emergency dispatch audio obtained by PEOPLE, the call for the incident was classified as a "code 3 for the overdose, color change."

In overdose cases, "color change" refers to cyanosis — low oxygen levels in the blood, often linked to heart or lung issues, per Cleveland Clinic — which causes a blue or purple discoloration of skin, lips, and nails.

San Francisco Police and San Francisco Fire Department both responded to a report of a medical emergency at the San Francisco Fairmont on Jan. 1 at 2:52 a.m., both departments confirmed to PEOPLE. Upon arrival at the scene, they found a deceased individual who was unnamed at the time.

NBC Bay Area later reported the woman found dead at the hotel is believed to be Victoria, citing a police source.

A police source told NBC Bay Area that they do not suspect foul play in relation to Victoria's death. The official cause of death has not yet been determined.

Shortly after Victoria's death, the family of Tommy Lee Jones shared a statement on Jan. 2 with PEOPLE which stated: “We appreciate all of the kind words, thoughts, and prayers. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time. Thank you."
