The country star revealed he's losing hearing in one ear
"I had to go get hearing aids as a 35-year-old man," said Thomas Rhett
It’s a little harder for Thomas Rhett to hear these days.
The 35-year-old country star appeared on the Monday, Feb. 9 episode of Annie F. Downs’ That Sounds Fun podcast alongside his wife Lauren Akins, who’s currently pregnant with their fifth child. During the interview, Thomas Rhett revealed one of his senses is weaker than it used to be.
“I’m kind of going deaf in this ear a little bit,” said the “Country Again” singer. “I had to go get hearing aids as a 35-year-old man.”
“I wore them for like a week,” continued Thomas Rhett, who recalled looking at Lauren in the moment and asking, “Is this legit what you hear all day long?”
She added, “He was like, ‘I can’t think straight. It’s so loud.’ I was like, ‘Babe, welcome.’”
Thomas Rhett said, “I’m sitting there just messing with the functions on my phone. I’m like, ‘Noise cancel, noise cancel,’ and when I take them out I’m like, ‘Okay, this is normal again.’ I just stand there, and I'm like, ‘This is insanity.’”
The Grammy-nominated artist explained he and Lauren, 36, don’t have a nanny, assistant or even a “consistent babysitter” — and joked the chaos of their home life sometimes leaves him itching to hit the road and play shows.
“Like, can we just book some dates in March? I don't care where they are. We'll go,” quipped Thomas Rhett. “I will come sing at your kids' birthday at this point. If as long as it's a three-day birthday.”
Looking forward to the birth of their fifth child, he said on a more serious note, “I don't want to discount the fact that it’s a huge miracle, and it’s a gift. But also, to be completely honest I haven’t thought about it a lot because there’s so much happening.”
The couple — who share daughters Lillie Carolina, 4, Lennon Love, 6, Ada James, 8, and Willa Gray, 10 — announced Lauren’s latest pregnancy in August 2025.
In an interview with Taste of Country following the announcement, Thomas Rhett shared that he and his wife will not find out the sex of their baby before Lauren gives birth.
"Due date is in March and we are going to wait until the day of to figure out what the gender is," he said. "It's terrifying for me, but there's not many surprises left in this world, and I feel that's one that you kinda get to be surprised with, if you choose to."
Thomas Rhett also noted this baby might be their last. "I mean, five has kind of always been our number," he said, joking, "anything above five, we will have to get a Sprinter van."
Last year, Thomas Rhett and Lauren also welcomed two dogs, Nero and Moose, into their lives after their canine pals Kona and Cash died months earlier.
