Sydney Sweeney features in Berlin’s Hot List. Berlin’s EFM, also known as the European Film Market, is the first big movie market of the year. Notably, it is a place where all kinds of films and artists can thrive in their niche. This year’s most-talked-about stars include Sweeney, Charlie XCX, Chris Hemsworth, Brie Larson, Ethan Hawke, and Zoe Saldana.

Sydney Sweeney enters Berlin’s Hot List

Sydney Sweeney has been named in Berlin’s Hot List. Berlin’s EFM is focused on package business, which consists of film projects that have their base ready in terms of a bound script, director, and actors attached to the film. These package businesses are seeking financing for their films, and Berlin’s EFM will help them achieve this feat.

Sweeney is set to star in another literary adaptation, The Custom of the Country. Josie Rourke, of Mary Queen of Scots fame, is directing and writing the adaptation of the classic Edith Wharton novel. The 28-year-old is set to play Undine Spragg, an ambitious and go-getter Midwest woman who attempts to climb the social ladder in turn-of-the-century New York (via The Hollywood Reporter).

The official press release states Spragg is “armed with beauty, daring/hustle, and sheer force of will and unwavering ambition, battles an entrenched elite, fearlessly courting controversy, until love and fortune align” (via Variety).

Casting director Nina Gold will build the roster of supporting cast around Sweeney. The 28-year-old had a mixed bag last year, with only The Housemaid performing decently at the box office. Sweeney hopes to turn the tide in her favor and land prestige international buyers for her new movie featuring her in the titular role.

As per Rourke, Undine Spragg is the “original dangerous woman” and lavished praise on Sweeney. The English director dished, “The book whistles with modernity, and as I was writing this adaptation, Sydney Sweeney lived in my head as this iconic character — it’s as if Wharton sat down a century ago and wrote the role for her.”

StudioCanal will produce the literary adaptation and release the film theatrically in all its territories. They previously collaborated with Sweeney on the film adaptation of Freida McFadden’s hit thriller novel, The Housemaid.
