Jimmy and Sofi are hitting the brakes on their relationship.

In *Shrinking*’s latest episode, it’s time for Alice’s (Lukita Maxwell) high school graduation, but before Jimmy (Jason Segel) can pull out the baby photos, he has some damage control to do when his dad, Randy (Jeff Daniels), reveals he’ll be skipping town the morning of the ceremony for a fishing trip instead.

While Alice doesn’t seem to mind her grandpa missing the ceremony — time spent fixing an old car together was more important to her — Randy prioritizing the fishing trip over the graduation brings up old feelings of abandonment for Jimmy. And when his new girlfriend Sofi (Cobie Smulders) gets along great with Randy, well… let’s just say there's a speed bump or two. But when Randy tells Jimmy that Sofi "might be an even better fit" for him than his late wife, Tia (Lilan Bowden), Jimmy quickly heads for the exit ramp.

By the end of the episode, Jimmy tells Sofi, "I'm not ready for this. I'm not ready for us. I really thought I was; I'm sorry, but I'm not." Sofi is clearly gutted, and — despite their earlier agreement that they weren't afraid to move quickly — notes, "Wow. We really did move quick, didn't we?"

Smulders tells ** that the whirlwind romance between Jimmy and Sofi was almost inevitable, given that both Jimmy and Sofi are coming off of long-term relationships.

"These are two characters that have been through a lot, you know? Everybody knows the things that Jimmy has gone through, but the character of Sofi, she's very newly single. She has a kid. I think it's easy when you sort of start to develop feelings for somebody to kind of fast forward a little bit because [that's] what you know and what you're comfortable with, is a pretty serious relationship," Smulders says. "So I think Sofi is just learning how to kind of date again and was obviously very taken and enamored by Jimmy and was just really excited to be a part of something that was making her feel good."

Smulders recognizes that Randy’s words to his son likely played a big part in Jimmy’s decision to put his relationship with Sofi on ice.

“I mean, losing a partner, losing a co-parent has gotta be maybe one of the worst things that could happen to you. And I can't imagine what that would be like,” Smulders tells **. “But bringing up comparisons from past partners to new partners is just, I think it's always a really dangerous thing to do."

She continues, “Obviously in this situation, the character of Jimmy is very guarded, and it's a really sensitive subject. So obviously he's gonna have the reactions he's gonna have… but yeah, it's really hard to hear, especially somebody who you have a relationship with already, and who knows both people involved. It's tricky. So I'm not surprised he reacted that way, I guess. I'm not surprised at that reaction.”

Smulders says that the breakup will lead to “a moment of reflection” for Sofi.

“They get caught up in this whirlwind, you know? I think she's probably taking a little step back and kind of reexamining things,” she says. “In my mind when I was playing it, this was the first relationship she's kind of attempted since her divorce. And so she's got some fresh wounds, and I think she's tending to them, and she's reexamining her priorities and what she needs.”

*Shrinking* episodes drop Wednesdays on Apple TV.
