*Outlander* fans aren't the only ones waiting with bated breath to learn how the time-hopping romance series will end.
Although filming of the eighth and final season is already in the can, star Sam Heughan confesses that even the cast doesn't know the show's true conclusion, including the fate of his character Jamie Fraser, which has been repeatedly teased as rather ominous.
"We don't really know how it ends," Heughan declared in a recent interview with PEOPLE. "We kind of know, but we shall see in the edit ourselves."
However, the actor did promise that season 8, which hits Starz on March 6, will bring "reconciliation… war and eternity."

The next chapter of the Emmy-nominated historical fantasy follows Jamie and wife, Claire (Caitríona Balfe), as they discover that the war has followed them home to a now-flourishing Fraser's Ridge after they've been away for years.
The new season comes a full year after the explosive season 7 finale, which capped with the shocker that the deceased Jane (Silvia Presente) and her younger sister, Fanny (Florrie Wilkinson), may actually be the daughters of Faith, Jamie and Claire's daughter who was believed to have died at birth.**

*Outlander *is based on Diana Gabaldon's best-selling book series of the same name about the epic love story between an English World War II nurse who travels back in time to 18th-century Scotland and meets a handsome Highlander. The television adaptation, which premiered in 2014, is concluding before Gabaldon has published the planned 10th and final book in the series.
"I hope [viewers] feel we have done justice to the characters and to the story and to the fans," Heughan said. "You know, it's hard. How do you finish a show like that? Obviously, we didn't finish the books. We had to finish our show, so it is a departure from the books in some ways, but for us it was rewarding, and we wanted to finish it right."
