Maury Povich is opening up about the most personal chapter of his 41-year marriage to Connie Chung — their painful struggle to have a child.
"We tried to get pregnant," Maury, 86, explained to Bunnie Xo on the November 2 episode of her "Dumb Blonde" podcast. "This is over 30 years ago. Connie had to take time off from CBS, and it became a big story that we were trying to get pregnant."
Their fertility struggles quickly became tabloid fodder, Maury recalled.

"Late show guys, you know, Jay Leno and everybody was making fun, 'I wonder if Maury and Connie are doing it tonight,'" he continued. "There was all kinds of press and all kinds of stuff, so we finally adopted because we couldn’t do it. It’s tough."
The former CBS Evening News anchor previously opened up about their struggle to conceive, recalling in a December 2024 essay for Business Insider becoming "the punch line of comedians' jokes."
"Maury helped me compose a statement to release to the news media," Connie recalled at the time, explaining that they announced they were "'aggressively' pursuing having a baby."
"What we meant was that we were seeking extraordinary measures such as in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination," she continued. "We did not spell it all out in the announcement, thinking we could at least keep those details private. We foolishly did not realize that using the word 'aggressive' was an invitation to mockery."
Maury and Connie ultimately adopted their son, Matthew, now-30, in 1995.
"When we're starting to adopt, Connie says to the lawyer that we hired, 'So, we want a child who is half Chinese and half Jewish,'" he laughed. "And the lawyer says, 'You won't live long enough.'"
He went on to say that despite it being a closed adoption, the news was leaked to the tabloids.
In addition to Matthew, Maury is also father to daughters Susan Anne Povich, 62, and Amy Joyce Povich, 58, whom he shares with ex-wife Phyllis Minkoff.
