The actor, who attended the 2025 CFDA Fashion Awards on Nov. 3, opened up about the "tough" decisions he had to make while finding the perfect sparkler for his love

Powers and Destiny announced their engagement in October and have been together for a decade, minus a brief separation that began in 2022

Keith Powers worked hard to make his proposal to Ryan Destiny just right, starting with the perfect engagement ring.

"Man, it was tough," the Uglies actor tells PEOPLE exclusively at the 2025 CFDA Fashion Awards on finding the sparkler for his wife-to-be.

Of course, "you have to ask your girlfriend at the time what she likes without giving away [the ring design]" says Powers, who added that he "knew the basis of what Ryan loved." He adds, "I was super indecisive. It was tough, but I got the right one. She loves it."

Now that what some might consider the hard part is done, Powers, 33, is beyond excited to take the next step in his relationship with the Grown-ish actress, whom he's known for a decade.

"I’m looking forward to calling Ryan my wife and I’m looking forward to starting a family with her," he says. "It’s our relationship evolving. It's crazy to think that you can be with somebody for so long and you get engaged, it's like this is a whole new chapter, it's brand new. There’s so much to look forward to, but I’m really excited to build a family with her."

Both actors were on hand to celebrate fashion at this year's CFDA Awards in New York City at the American Museum of Natural History, though they walked the carpet separately.

Powers wore a teal leather jacket and trousers with a white collared shirt and tie for an element of classic menswear. Destiny, who started working with Law Roach earlier this year, arrived with the image architect, dressed in a black pencil dress with a sheer hooded overlay that flowed into a train. The pair's attendance followed their night out at Vogue World: Hollywood on Oct. 26, where Powers walked the runway and Destiny supported from the front row.

Powers and Destiny's story began when they met at a Teen Vogue party in 2015. After they started chatting on Instagram, their relationship turned romantic. Though they initially tried to keep their relationship out of the public eye, the couple confirmed their romance in their 2019 interview with We The Urban, with Destiny telling MadameNoire in September 2020 that the decision to go public wasn't something they planned.

"I just remember us for a long time not wanting to go public with it," she said. "We were like, 'We don't really feel like having a lot of opinions thrown at us.' One day, we just kinda wanted to post a picture with us, and it naturally happened, and we were like, 'Okay, so we're doing this.' "

In January 2022, a source confirmed to PEOPLE that Destiny and Powers had split after four years together, deciding to take a step away to focus on their "emerging careers" while also "remaining close friends." Destiny then confirmed that she'd rekindled her romance with Powers in February 2025.

The pair announced their engagement on October 5, 2025, with a joint Instagram post of what appeared to be an engagement shoot with photos of Destiny showing glimpses of her new rock. The post was captioned: "Engaged to the love of my life."

Essence revealed that the proposal took place over an intimate candlelit dinner at Rosewood Miramar Beach in Montecito, Calif. In their interview with the publication, Powers shared that he had plans to pop the question for a year and a half. "Things came up along the way, and I had to keep pushing it back. It made me a bit anxious, but I never questioned God’s timing."

The stars shared the mutual feeling of "floating" after celebrating the milestone. "Now that we’re stepping into wedding planning, we’re trying to approach it the same way we approach everything else that matters — with intention, patience, and communication."
