“You never know with these things,” the actress tells PEOPLE. "I really hope people see the movie"

Song Sung Blue hits theaters Dec. 25

Kate Hudson is being showered with awards buzz following the premiere of her new film Song Sung Blue, but she's taking a practical approach to all the love.

“Honestly, it's really just exciting. It's very exciting and that's it," the Almost Famous star, 46, told PEOPLE Tuesday at the Academy and Chanel Women’s Luncheon while discussing her new film, which tells the true story of a Neil Diamond tribute band.

The role marks a return to the Oscar conversation for Hudson, who first broke out in Cameron Crowe's rock drama Almost Famous 25 years ago.

Hudson continued: “You never know with these things. I've been around now long enough to know just to enjoy that people are really loving the movie," She added with a laugh, "And just, you know, show up to where they tell me to go.”

The award-winning actress has come close to winning an Oscar before. In 2001, Hudson was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Penny Lane in Almost Famous at the 73rd Academy Awards. She won a Golden Globe for her performance the same year.

Hudson, 46, stars alongside Hugh Jackman, 56, as Lightning & Thunder members Claire and Mike Sardina. The Milwaukee couple formed their cover band in 1989 in tribute to the “Sweet Caroline” singer, 84.

The movie depicts Lightning & Thunder in their early days and follows their professional-turned-romantic relationship.

“I really hope people see the movie,” said Hudson, who was fresh off of a wrap party for the second season of her Netflix show Running Point. “That's what I'm really looking forward to right now, is that I really want the movie to have the success that I think it deserves and because I want people to make more movies like this.”

“If we can have success at the movie theater with this movie, I hope it makes other people want to make more movies like this,” Hudson added.

Craig Brewer wrote and directed the film, while Greg Kohs — director of the 2008 documentary of the same name — serves as its executive producer.

“Based on a true story, two down-on-their-luck musicians form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band, proving it’s never too late to find love and follow your dreams,” reads a synopsis of Song Sung Blue, which hits theaters Dec. 25.

Hudson attended the Academy and Chanel’s Women’s Luncheon alongside the event's keynote speaker Kristen Stewart, who spoke out about pervasive gender inequality in Hollywood. The event annually brings together women from all facets of the filmmaking community to celebrate the Academy Gold Fellowship for Women.
