The city of Indianapolis is adding superstar Olympic gymnast Simone Biles to their population of nearly 900,000 residents in a package deal.

The Indianapolis Colts are signing safety Jonathan Owens, Biles' husband, to a one-year deal. ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Media's Mike Garafolo were first with the news of the Colts' latest transaction.

Owens, 30, last played two seasons for the Chicago Bears. In 2024, he played in 40% of the Bears' defensive snaps and 55% of their snaps on special teams. Last year, Owens was a more significant contributor on special teams – playing on 58% of Chicago's special teams snaps – than on defense, where he played just 4% of snaps.

The St. Louis native is entering his eighth season in the NFL and is set to re-join an AFC South squad after three years playing for NFC North teams. Owens played for the Houston Texans from 2019-2022, the Green Bay Packers in 2023 and the Bears for the last two seasons.

Owens began his career with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2019, but Arizona cut him at the end of training camp. He signed with Houston's practice squad shortly after and appeared in one game as a rookie. Owens established a bigger role with the Texans over the next three seasons, eventually starting all 17 games for Houston in 2022.

In his last three seasons, Owens has carved out a specific role in the NFL – splitting time playing defense and special teams with the Packers and Bears.

How Jonathan Owens fits with the Colts

Owens will be part of Indianapolis' reinforcements on defense and special teams after former Colts defensive backs Rodney Thomas (Seahawks) and Nick Cross (Commanders) left in free agency.

In 2025, Thomas played a similar role with the Colts as Owens did with the Bears. Thomas was active on 61% of Indy's special teams snaps and 13% of defensive snaps.

Cross played a more active role in the Colts' defense. He started all 17 games at safety for Indianapolis in 2024 and 2025.

In addition to Owens, the Colts have reportedly also agreed to terms to sign former Cowboys safety Juanyeh Thomas, another defensive back with plenty of special teams experience. Owens and Thomas will join cornerback Sauce Gardner, whom the Colts acquired at last year's trade deadline, and 2025 free agent acquisition Cam Bynum in Indianapolis' secondary as additional depth.
