Is the Iran war ending soon? What Trump has said

President Donald Trump said the war in Iran will continue and "we have not won enough."

The U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28 and have continued to do so for more than a week now. In the meantime, Iran has launched counterstrikes on neighboring countries. Trump and his administration have given several reasons as to why the U.S. engaged in this conflict, though even some lawmakers have questioned their purpose.

Within the first days of the strikes, the U.S. announced that longtime Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed along with other top officials. The war has also killed more than 1,500 people throughout the Middle East and seven U.S. soldiers.

Americans at home are feeling the effects of the war as gas prices have risen more than 40 cents per gallon in the last week, according to AAA.

How much longer will it last? Here is what we know:

"Ultimately, the president gets to determine the end state of those objectives," he said. "It's not for me to posit whether it's the beginning, middle or the end."

Trump gave a news conference on March 9, saying the war would be over "soon," but not within a week.

“We've already won in many ways, but we haven't won enough," Trump said earlier that afternoon at the Republican Members Issues Conference.

Trump has previously said the original campaign was projected to last four to five weeks. He also told The Times of Israel the end of the war would be a mutual decision with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"I think it’s mutual ... a little bit. We’ve been talking. I’ll make a decision at the right time, but everything’s going to be taken into account," Trump said.
