- *The Boys *star Erin Moriarty is detailing a painful incident from the series set that occurred before she received her Graves' disease diagnosis.
- The actress revealed in an Instagram story post that she "fell and shredded up my knee" ahead of shooting an "important episode," leading her to declare, "f--- autoimmune disease."
- Moriarty first disclosed her diagnosis with the thyroid condition in June 2025.
Erin Moriarty is opening up about a painful injury that nearly spoiled an important episode of *The Boys** *amid her ongoing battle against Graves' disease.
The timing of Moriarty's reminiscence was not coincidental. She shared the Instagram story post detailing the past injury on Thursday, a day after the premiere of fourth episode of the darkly comic superhero series' fifth season.
"Okay, so: season 5, episode 4 of *The Boys* is one of the most important episodes I've ever shot," Moriarty explained in a block of text over an up-close shot of her bandaged knee. "Unfortunately, that part of the season coincided with my health issues peaking before my diagnosis. I'm saving you the gnarly part of this picture but not long after this episode, I started to lose the ability to walk. The numbness in my feet led to a lot of falling. The night before we shot my segment of this episode, I fell and shredded up my knee."

As a result, Moriarty elaborated, "I barely have any [behind-the-scenes] shots of this season, especially as things worsened."
Quick to dispel the interpretation that she was simply sharing the grisly anecdote to garner sympathy, Moriarty clarified, "This isn't a pity post. It's mostly to say: f--- autoimmune disease. F--- it so hard. F--- the ignorance surrounding it, too. I can't remedy that ignorance but not being outspoken about it occasionally, feels wrong."

Moriarty first disclosed her Graves' disease diagnosis in June 2025. "Autoimmune disease manifests differently in everybody/every body," she said at the time. "One thing I can say: if I hadn't chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would've caught this sooner"
On a positive note, Moriarty shared that "within 24 hours of beginning treatment, I felt the light coming back on," and reported that she had been "increasing in strength ever since."
According to The Mayo Clinic, Graves' disease is an autoimmune condition that causes the thyroid gland to overproduce the thyroid hormone, inducing what is called hyperthyroidism. Graves' can manifest in myriad ways, including tremors, weight loss, eye conditions, lethargy and disturbed sleep, and a skin condition called Graves' dermopathy. There is currently no cure, but the condition is treatable.

*The Boys *season 5 episode 4, titled "King of Hell," sees Moriarty's Annie January play out a parallel storyline in which she reunites with her estranged father Rick (Tim Daly). Annie is crestfallen to discover that Rick didn't leave her as a child because he didn't want children; he in fact started a new family, leaving Annie to conclude that he merely didn't want *her*.
She and Rick reconcile by the episode's end, however, making for one of the season's most heartfelt moments thus far.
New episodes of *The Boys* hit Prime Video every Wednesday at 3 a.m. ET.
