Ashton Kutcher has made a rare public comment about ex-wife Demi Moore, as the actor fielded a question about similarities between the pair's recent respective projects, The Beauty and The Substance.

Ahead of the premiere of the Ryan Murphy-led horror series, the star sat for a recent interview alongside his Beauty costars Anthony Ramos and Jeremy Pope. In the 13-minute video (below), Entertainment Tonight asked the group about fan comparisons between The Beauty and The Substance — which starred Moore — as both follow people who ingest bodily treatments in pursuit of physical enhancement.

"I definitely understand it, given that that was something that was wildly successful and at the top of everyone's brains," Pope says, defending Murphy from the comparisons by pointing audiences toward his past work on Nip/Tuck and American Horror Story, both of which he said similarly explore "two truths at the same time" in their narratives.

Then, Kutcher jumped in and praised Moore's work in The Substance, after his former romantic partner garnered significant critical and commercial success, including the first Oscar nomination in her career.

"One, Demi's performance in The Substance, obviously she got extraordinary accolades. I'm so proud of her, she killed it," Kutcher said, praising Moore's work in the project.

Kutcher and Moore were married from 2005 to 2013, and their relationship was heavily covered — and scrutinized — by the media in the mid-to-late aughts.

Kutcher continued, voicing his own take on how comic book adaptation The Beauty presents its themes revolving around the pursuit of perfection.

"The bigger context though is we're in a society where cosmetic enhancement is becoming increasingly predominant and accepted. It's a weird thing," Kutcher, a former model, said. "It used to be braces on your teeth were the only acceptable cosmetic enhancement, otherwise you'd be judged for it. I think, gradually, there's a social acceptance of, hey, that makes that person feel happy, and that's what matters more than any aesthetic outcome. There's a gradual adjustment of societal norms around that."

He finished by stressing that "Ryan really wanted to explore that beauty is very different for each one of these characters," but warned that "sometimes these things come with unintended consequences."

Besides Kutcher, Ramos, and Pope, The Beauty also stars Evan Peters and Rebecca Hall in the main cast, with other, smaller roles played by Isabella Rossellini, Bella Hadid, and pop star Meghan Trainor.

Murphy previewed the series on stage at New York Comic Con in October, where he promised that the program contains "exploding supermodels" and “a lot of body horror."

The Beauty premieres Jan. 21 on Hulu on Disney+. Watch Kutcher discuss Moore in the video above.
