Even on his day off, Al Roker can't seem to stay away from his cohosts on the *Today *show.

The beloved* *weatherman gave his *3rd Hour of Today *cohosts Sheinelle Jones, Craig Melvin, and Dylan Dreyer a surprise when he popped up (literally) during their interview with Broadway star Jordan Litz on Tuesday.

The cohosts were chatting with Litz, who plays Fiyero on Broadway's *Wicked*, about what it was like performing two shows after finishing the New York City marathon when Melvin pointed out that Roker could be seen watching the foursome through the windows of Studio 1A.

"I gotta be honest with you, it's hard to keep track and focus, because this guy," Melvin said, pointing to Roker in the window, who raised his mug in greeting as everyone turned to see him.

The sight of Roker led to much laughter among those in studio, with Jones explaining that Roker was absent from today's broadcast because of a "late night."

"Oh my God, Al Roker! Thanks for coming in to work today, buddy," she quipped, "In his defense, he got in really late last night, so we're letting him sleep in."

Melvin shouted to the 71-year-old, "We're doing a show!" as Roker jokingly mocked the crew from outside.

But Roker wasn't done with his coworkers. As Litz shared the support he received from his family while working on *Wicked *and training for the marathon, Roker could be seen moving around the outside of the studio until he was standing behind Melvin and Jones.

"What is wrong with your friend?" Jones jokingly asked Melvin. "He keeps popping up everywhere."

Melvin wryly noted that Roker "couldn't come to work today, but he could hang outside the studio."

Later in the day, Roker finally made his way *inside *the studio, but he was only there for a quick moment. "I'd love to stay, but I've gotta go. We've got things to do," he said with a quick wave.

Although Melvin joked that Roker was practicing "early retirement" by doing just a minute of the morning show, fans know that the weatherman isn't going anywhere, anytime soon.

He's been holding down the fort on NBC and *Today* for over 45 years, and is undeniably integral to the network after all this time.

When celebrating his 45th anniversary on the show in 2023, Roker's cohosts extoll how he is the "beating heart on this show," and put together a "by the numbers" card to break down how vital he has been to the network since he started his career on WKYC in Cleveland, which was, at that time, an NBC affiliate.

And in September of 2024, Roker assured PEOPLE that he has no plans to retire at this time.

"I don't feel like that's my time yet, but who knows. Maybe a year or two. Maybe not, but I'm enjoying it. I love this," Roker said at the time. "You don't get off the train until the last stop."
